xlibre sucks.
If you want to continue using X11-based desktops e.g. LXDE, then you should look at the Wayback project.
Wayback is still beta for now, on this day, but the developer Ariadne Conill has suggested to me that it will probably be available in Alpine Linux in 2026 as the default X11 implementation. Ariadne is Wayback’s founding developer.
Wayback is the best project long-term, because the code is very simple; it uses wlroots and xwayland so it’s basically providing the necessary glue for what is essentially already implemented.
Therefore, Wayback provides a much lower maintenance cost for Linux distro maintainers. I fully expect that this will replace Xorg in the future, on every major distro.
The Xorg project has been on life support for years, because the preference is that everyone switch to Wayland, which is much better these days and only getting better. There might be merit in forking Xorg, but Xlibre is not the answer - its developer is an incompetent boob.
For example, someone had to send this bug fix fixing a bug introduced by xlibre’s developer, who thought the ^
operator in C is for indicies, so he thought that 2^16
means two to the power of sixteen. In reality, it is the XOR operator. Enrico had committed several patches, converting ^
operators to <<
operators (bit shift) on this basis.
This is basic C knowledge.
Do you want someone who doesn’t know what the fucking XOR operator is, maintaining your Xserver?
Enrico also posted some insane shit on Linux Kernel Mailing List, telling everyone not to get the Covid vaccines, because of some conspiracy theory nonsense. Linus Torvald’s response was swift and just.
You can find Wayback on wayback.freedesktop.org and Ariadne also published this article about it.
I use X11 myself, since I’m a big fan of the LXDE project. I use LXDE daily. I’d like to port it to Wayland at some point, because I much prefer its interface and design over the changes made in LXQt, but I’m happy with Xorg for now. When I next upgrade my distro, Wayback will be another choice available to me.
Choice is good.
But nazis are not a choice - nazis are a threat.
Nazis are bad. Please avoid them at all costs.
This post by Enrico Weigelt was submitted to the Devuan mailing list in 2018. It is clearly neo-Nazi propaganda. This is who maintains Xlibre.
So if you want an incompetent nazi maintaining your Xserver, use Xlibre by all means. Otherwise… use wayback or Xorg. Or just use a Wayland compositor.
KDE and GNOME both have pretty decent Wayland support these days, and several smaller projects also work well. For example, the Sway project provides a sensible tiling window manager on Wayland. DWL is also pretty nice. The choices are endless.
Nazis are anti-choice. They’re just a bunch of reactionary dipshits. That’s all there is to say.
Enrico shall forever be known as the xlibreboob.
