Libreboob Adventures

Return to index

An intentionally badly drawn, badly designed webcomic made on a whim that nobody should ever read.

Mostly about free and open source software things. Brought to you by the creator of Libreboot. Message me on Mastodon if you really want to.

You can also find my blog at vimuser.org - I was going to publish the webcomic there, but decided to use Libreboob.org instead.

Who is Leah Rowe?

Here is a photo of me:

This is a real photo of me

I draw Libreboob comics entirely with a ballpoint pen, e.g. bic pen.

Here is a bic pen. My bic pen:

bic pen

Several libreboob comics were literally drawn with this pen. I don’t use pencil either. Why would I? I just go straight for the bic. I Rohan Kishibe that shit.

I like computer programming, (british) conservative politics, enjoy various genres of music and occasionally play (retro) computer games. I’m also trans (non-binary) and an ace, and sometimes draw really, really gay things on Libreboob. Because I can. I also like anime/manga, but only good ones (so, basically mostly stuff from the 90s and 2000s).

What a load of shit.

I don’t really know what else to say. All that I am is Libreboob, and my various other projects. Anything else would be a matter of personality and mannerisms, which don’t really matter unless you’re interacting with me, and then you’d make your own mind up - me describing how I think is futile. I often don’t even think. Half the time I’m just winging it, and basically have no idea how I come up with things, I just sort of do.

What inspires libreboob?

I mostly started Libreboob on a whim. Like, on the day I first made it, I did not wake up that day and plan it at all. I just started, and had a website up in about 10 minutes.

Libreboob is basically the webcomic equivalent of shitposting, for the most part, but it can also be serious. I feel that a lot of web comics out there are extremely whitewashed and mostlly boring, so I wanted one that is from my own personality and experiences.

I do like XKCD and it is in fact one of my inspirations. I also enjoyed reading hackles back in the day.

There is no plan. No grand scheme. I just draw when I feel like it, and upload the result.

How is Libreboob drawn?

SPOILER ALERT, CLOSE PAGE IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE A FUTURE UNPUBLISHED COMIC THAT MAY RUIN THE SURPRISE FOR A STORY I’M DEVELOPING, ALREADY PUBLISHED (the one with Alice and the Androids).

NOTE: At the time of publication, the photos below reveal spoilers for future Libreboob comics. I will remove this spoiler alert when it has been officially published.

My setup is really simple:

First, I plan out the comic with simple stick figures and shapes. Pencil is never used; I know in my head what I want to see, so I go straight for the ink. As previously stated, I Rohan Kishibe that shit:

Basic outline

I then immediately start drawing more details, in blank ink. Imagine I’m only using black ink here, but then mixing the red on top:

Some completed panels

I keep filling in the panels as I go. Sometimes I also make minor touches to previous panels, as I go, as in this picture:

The previous image, but with more panels filled in

And for the above drawings, you can see here the pens that I used:

Red and black ballpoint pens

And that’s basically the whole process.

Some details to note in the above photos: you’ll note that as I go, the text gets thicker as panels are filled in. I don’t go straight for the think black ink; I go light at first, adding the colouring and shading gradually, then thickening the text more slightly, until eventually the panel is otherwise complete, and I go hard on the text. You’ll notice in these examples, there is also red highlighting behind the text.

One hundred percent drawn with black and red ballpoint pens, and nothing else.

I don’t like doing digital art. I’m not against it existing. I just don’t like doing it. I’m analog.

One day i might use other materials for comics, e.g. pencils, pastels, paints.

One hundred percent hand-drawn. Computer art isn’t my cup of tea. No AI nonsense either.

And if you did look at the above unpublished works, then you are definitely compatible to my wave length. I shall hereby use my Heaven’s Door to make you love Alice unconditionally.
